Social Skills

Under the Umbrella Tree Educational Services, Inc. (UTUT) began as a social skills playgroup in 2003. Our goal is to provide children with the necessary tools to be functional social communicators. To achieve this goal, we organize social skill groups to mimic the natural environment. In addition, we contrive situations to encourage children to interact appropriately and independently with the other children in the playgroup. We use the 'least to most' prompt method to teach appropriate social interaction.

Some of the skills we focus on during a social skills group:

    * Trading and sharing
    * Turn taking with peers
    * Coping (environment, peers, task)
    * Initiating communication with others
    * Dramatic and imaginary play concepts
    * Sports play
    * Giving and responding to directions
    * Building social relationships
    * Developing or enhancing leadership skills
    * Problem solving
    * Working on sensory desensitization
    * Gross and fine motor skills

Social skill groups run in 8 week sessions and run throughout the year.
